What is a smart grid?

Nations' electricity delivery systems - also known as “the grid” - that has served individual nations so well for almost a century is rapidly running up against its capabilities. Within the limits of our current energy systems, our economic activities may continue to thrive, but typically, the risks associated with relying on an already overstretched grid grow in size, scale and complexity daily.

In order to protect the future, a more intelligent electricity system, or “Smart Grid,” is required that combines information technology (IT) with distributed generation such solar and wind energy to significantly improve how electricity is generated, delivered, and consumed.

A smart grid is an intelligent digitized energy network delivering electricity in an optimal way from source to end users. This is achieved by integrating information, telecommunication and power technologies with the existing electricity infrastructure.

Benefits of Smart Grid:

•   Improved efficiency and reliability of the electricity supply
•   Integration of more renewable energy into existing networks
•   Supporting the development of electric vehicles at scale
•   New solutions for customers to optimize their electricity consumption
•   Reduction of carbon emissions
